DSI strengthens supplier relationship with Cummins EMEA

Cummins Inc., a global power leader, is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems.

Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana (USA), Cummins serves customers in approximately 190 countries and territories through a network of more than 500 Company-owned and independent distributor locations and approximately 5,200 dealer locations.

Cummins reported net income of $755 million on sales of $14.34 billion in 2008.

DSI was selected as the preferred supplier to Cummins EMEA in May 2008 by Brian Dunford (Global Application Hosting Manager) and Phil Corbett (UNIX lead for EMEA). Brian & Phil said; "We wanted a supplier that would not only provide UNIX hardware and services to meet tight time-scales but also provide added value, become more of a partnership and go that extra mile.

We selected DSI as we both felt that the Mike and his team were able to meet the current requirements but also the future demands of Cummins."

DSI have worked closely with Cummins throughout 2008 and 2009 on a technology refresh and server consolidation program, assisting in providing solutions that meet the diverse needs of the various Cummins business units.

Brian said "Server consolidation and virtualization has resulted in a much smaller server footprint and realized significant savings to the business.

Our customers expect fast deployment of new servers to meet their business objectives and the service that DSI has provided has enabled us to exceed expectations, which is a nice position to be in"

Cummins has recently deployed a high performance Linux grid compute solution with 20 * X6240's at the heart of it, using Sun Grid engine for job scheduling and control.

This was necessary to meet the ever increasing engineering computing needs of the Turbo Business Unit.

Phil commented - "DSI were not only able to deliver the hardware specs required for the grid but also the technical input to get the platforms operational, following the successful commissioning of all the components the business and application team were delighted by the systems capability & performance"

Phil said “one the issues he had inherited was the number of VERITAS licenses the company had and their contract dates, our account manager Paul Lyons offered to help tidy up the issue and DSI now manage the license portfolio for Cummins.

So when we need to add or remove a license we just contact Paul. DSI also help us with our Sun Support contracts making them all co-terminus and look after them as well working with Sun to make sure we get the correct level of support from Sun"
